Emily Shihan Shen
Founder / Instructor

Hi ^^ I am the founder of Sound and Spirit. I am currently in grade 11 at Southridge School and some of my passions other than music are writing and playing badminton. I plan to go into music professionally in the future. With this organization, I hope to help people pursue their musical goals / interests and introduce the world of music to others. I am excited to see where Sound and Spirit goes and I am confident it will do great things :) I have been singing since 2017. I'm VERY passionate about music and I'm involved in many ensembles in school where I play a variety of instruments: - Choir & Vocal Ensemble (high soprano, 4 years) - Concert Band (bassoon, 4 years) - Jazz Band (tenor saxophone, 2 years) -Jazz Pianist (2 years) I did my first ever singing performance in a church in Vancouver and my most recent singing involvement is in the Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! Summer Camp in Vancouver, through a won scholarship. Although I love playing instruments, my favorite thing to do is still singing. I've been involved in many competitions, since the age of 9 such as WRMF, Kiwanis, VAYA, Songfest, RMF, BCCM, CCTV and more. I have won bursaries, trophies, medals, scholarships, and countless certificates.

Eddie Hu
Co Founder / Instructor

Hi! I am a student at Langley Fine Arts School, and a 14 year old pianist who has a great passion for music. I also recently started voice. Music has been my passion since I was 4, and I love sharing it with audiences everywhere as well as teaching the little ones. Besides music, I love sports, especially tennis and golf. I am excited to be helping others achieve their passion in music, and help them enjoy it just as much as I do. I have nearly 10 years of experience, multiple Kiwanis Music Festival awards, and have done dozens of performance at recitals across Vancouver.

Hannah Park
Instructor / Band Assistant

Hi! I'm Hannah (Kireina) Park, a current senior at Southridge School in Surrey. I'm constantly hyper-fixated on a new interest, whether that be music, science, or one of the many hobbies I rotate through; I enjoy caring for plants (my windowsill is basically a jungle ecosystem!), dabble in pottery, and drink a frankly excessive amount of tea. Outside of music, I've spent the last five years as both a competitor and a coach for forensics (speech and debate), and I'm also a published novelist; post-university, I plan to pursue a career in cardiac surgery. I've been playing the flute for nearly three years now, and currently serve as both the Music Steward and flute section leader at Southridge. Alongside flute, I've explored around 15 different instruments with varying levels of proficiency—my main focuses right now are flute, voice, guitar, and piano. I regularly transcribe and arrange music, especially for vocal duets and choir or vocal jazz ensembles, and I enjoy songwriting and composing when inspiration strikes. I also repair instruments—mostly woodwinds and strings—and have worked on everything from sticky pads and loose screws to tuning pegs and bridges. Music has always been an integral part of my life, and I'm really excited to pass on what I've learned through Sound and Spirit!

Sarah Brown
Band Assistant

Hi, my name is Sarah Brown and I’m trumpet support for beginner band students. I’m currently in grade 11, and the subjects I’m most interested in are math, physics, and computer science. Outside of school and music, I’ve been playing high performance water polo year round for five years, and I swim competitively during the summer. I also like to read, bake, play video games, code, and hang out with my friends in my free time. I’ve been taking piano lessons and singing casually ever since I was younger, and I have been studying theory along with piano and have taken multiple theory exams, which I scored well on. I started playing the trumpet in my school’s grade seven band. I’ve been playing the trumpet in band class throughout the entirety of high school, and I have also been part of many other bands within school including the brass choir, the jazz studies class, and the jazz band. I’m in both my school’s choir and vocal jazz ensembles which I’ve been in since the beginning of high school, and I also briefly took violin lessons for two years before becoming too busy to continue. Currently, I’m trying to teach myself to play the guitar, although I am definitely still a beginner.

Alicia Luo
Band Assistant

Hi guys, my name is Alicia and I'm in 11th grade currently. I’m here to help you with the clarinet—whether you're chasing big ideas or forced by your mom. I don’t criticize, I don’t judge, and I never run out of patience I have been playing the clarinet for 2 years in band. Back in grade 9, I literally had to learn all the basics and build my foundation within 3 weeks, and it was quite a chaotic time. However, my music "journey" started way before that: I did piano, guitar, traditional flute, etc. I hope that I can also play a part in your music journey as well.
